This page walks through every filter in Company Search, group by group. For the basics of running a search, start with [Company search](/search/company-search). ## How the panel works * **Filters combine with AND.** Every filter you add narrows the universe. Within one filter, multiple values match any of them (OR), unless noted otherwise. * **The live count is your feedback loop.** The button at the bottom recalculates as you edit ("Show 3.9M+ companies"), so add criteria one at a time and watch what each one does. * **Finding a filter**: the search box at the top of the panel filters the panel itself. * **Pinning**: the pin icon on each section keeps your favorites handy at the top. * **Missing something?** The **Request a filter** link at the bottom goes straight to us. ## Locations * **Location**: filter by company headquarters. Pick a city and choose a radius: **None** for exact-city matches, or 5 to 250 miles (default 50) to include nearby cities. Picking a state or country matches everything in it. **View on Map** previews the area you have covered. * **Expanded matching**: some companies only carry a state- or country-level location. Checked, a city search also includes those; unchecked (the default), you get only companies matched to the exact city. * **Nearby Locations**: click **Suggest Nearby** for one-click additions of neighboring metros. ## Sectors * **Sector**: the heart of company search. Click the box to open the **Sector Browser**, which has two modes: * **AI**: describe what you are targeting in plain language ("Industrial automation and robotics", "B2B fintech for cross-border payments") and matching sectors are picked for you, with related suggestions grouped for one-click **Add All**. * **Keyword**: browse and search the full sector tree yourself, with company counts per sector and an optional sort-by-count. * **Sector Boolean expressions**: the **Boolean** button accepts full logic: * Quote multi-word phrases: `"Digital Media" OR "Internet News"` * Group with parentheses: `("Artificial Intelligence" OR "Machine Learning") AND "Software"` * `NOT` binds tightly: `A OR B NOT C` reads as `A OR (B NOT C)` * Wildcards: `*Energy*` matches "Renewable Energy" and "Energy Storage" * **Primary Sector Only**: checked, only companies whose *main* business is the selected sector; unchecked, primary or secondary sector both match. * **Company Type**: Product/Manufacturing versus Services businesses. * **Domains**: B2B versus B2C. Sector matching favors companies where your sector is primary, and named market leaders and rising stars in that sector rank higher. If a company seems missing, check whether the sector is its secondary classification and turn **Primary Sector Only** off. ## Scale * **Current Stage**: the company's current funding stage, Seed through Series H. This filter also limits results to operating companies (a company that exited is no longer "at" a stage). * **Funding History**: stages the company has been through, current or past. "Series B" here means it *raised* a Series B at some point, even if it is at Series D today; use this for "companies that made it past stage X". * **Market Cap (millions)**: market capitalization range, in \$M. * **Revenue (millions)**: latest reported annual revenue range, in \$M. * **Total Funding (millions)**: total capital raised, in \$M. * **Current Company Headcount**: employee count today, in standard bands (1-10 up to 10,000+). ## Attributes * **Asset Class**: current ownership profile: * **Public**: publicly traded. * **Private**: any privately held company. * **Private - PE-Backed**: has private equity investors. * **Private - PE-Primary**: the primary owner is a private equity firm. * **Private - VC-Backed**: has venture capital investors. Multiple selections match any of them. * **Status**: where the company is in its lifecycle: **Private** (operating), **Public**, **Acquired**, or **Closed**. * **Exclude Sector**: remove whole industries from the universe (e.g., searching "AI" companies but not Gaming). * **Exclude Customer Sector**: remove companies that *sell into* specific industries. * **Company Investors**: companies backed by specific investors. The reverse direction works too: every investor profile lists its portfolio. ## Keywords * **Company Text**: free-text search over company descriptions, specialties, products, and technologies. The go-to filter for niches the sector tree does not name yet ("grid-scale storage", "revenue intelligence"). Terms with `AND` / `OR` / `NOT` are honored as Boolean logic. * **Advanced** (the button next to the input) tunes how keywords behave: * **With sector operator**: AND (default) requires companies to match your keywords *and* your selected sectors; OR broadens to either. * **Semantic Expansion**: expand your terms to similar concepts using AI. * **Include Patents** and **Include Websites** (both on by default): also surface companies whose patents or website content match your keywords, catching companies whose short description undersells what they do. ## Date Filters Three dropdowns, each with **All / Last Decade / Last 5 Years / Last 2 Years / Last Year**: * **Founded Date**: when the company was founded. * **Funded Date**: when it last received funding. "Last 2 Years" is a quick recency screen for active fundraisers. * **Exit Date**: when it went public or was acquired. Each option means "on or after that point": Last 5 Years = any time in the last five years. ## Smart Tags AI-powered tags for domains where sector labels are too coarse, in two families: * **Biotech**: **Disease Areas** (a browsable tree of indications) and **Therapeutics** (modalities and mechanisms, four levels deep). * **Real Estate**: **Property Types**: Data Centers, Healthcare, Hospitality, Housing, Industrial, Land, Multifamily, Office, REIT, Residential, Retail. Pick tags in the selector; multiple tags within a family match any of them. Matching is intentionally broad: a tag matches companies whose tags contain it, so "Housing" also captures adjacent tags like "Housing Finance". ## Company Name Look up companies by name, full or partial; word order does not matter ("labs acme" finds Acme Labs). Search one name at a time; for jumping to a specific known company, **Quick Find** (Ctrl+Shift+L) is usually faster. *** Unsure what a filter will do?
